City of Roses is a captivating painting by Suchiu that blends the familiar landmarks of Windsor, Ontario, with symbolic elements that celebrate the region’s rich history. At first glance, viewers will recognize the iconic Detroit River and the Ambassador Bridge, elements that are synonymous with this vibrant border city. But look closely, and you’ll notice that the scene also includes a few imaginative touches, such as a flower garden and a unique sculpture. These elements, while not historically accurate, were thoughtfully placed by the artist to create a cohesive and harmonious composition.
The painting also incorporates subtle historical symbols, such as the HMS Detroit, a majestic sailing ship that was launched from nearby Amherstburg in 1813. This nod to the area’s naval history adds a layer of depth to the piece. In another personal tribute, a lake freighter in the painting represents the moment when Suchiu first heard the tale of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald, immortalized by the song of his friend, Gordon Lightfoot.
Commissioned by a North American corporation with a location in Windsor, the original painting now resides in their head office in Tokyo, Japan.
