Ron Suchiu’s “Cruisin’ 65” painting transports you to the carefree days of the 1960s and 1970s, when the main weekend activity was cruising the streets in search of good company and great food. Without the distractions of modern technology, friends would gather, pool together for gas money, and cruise from one drive-in restaurant to the next. Suchiu perfectly captures this slice of Americana with a scene that brings back fond memories of simpler times.
In the foreground, a 1958 white Corvette—a car the artist owned when he first met His Wife takes center stage, complete with a personalized license plate. This car, which holds special sentimental value to Suchiu, adds an authentic touch to the painting. The Hi Ho restaurant, featured in the painting, is one of the beloved spots where friends would hang out. Known for its legendary gravy and fries, it also boasted an unusual and whimsical décor featuring characters from Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. What makes this even more special is that the restaurant owner personally received permission from Walt Disney himself to use these characters—an uncommon gesture today.
