Erie Romance – Friends is a powerful and symbolic piece that represents the unique geographic relationship between two cities: Detroit and Windsor, situated on either side of the Detroit River. Capturing this intimate scene, Suchiu expertly blends real-world locations with artistic vision, creating a striking visual narrative of the southern-most peninsula of mainland Canada.
In the painting, two ships are depicted in perfect harmony—each uniquely representative of the cities they connect. The larger ship represents Detroit, while the smaller vessel symbolizes Windsor, with both vessels anchored at the historic Leamington dock, once the first Southern Ontario international trade port. The symbolism is further enhanced by the inclusion of the Pelee Island ferry, which stands as a tribute to the scenic Pelee Island just off the coast.
The sky above, a signature of Suchiu’s work, dazzles with soft mauve, purple, and salmon hues—a color palette that has come to be affectionately known as “Ron’s Sky.” His use of vibrant colors brings a dramatic life to the scene, offering viewers a glimpse into the colorful skies of real life that many miss in their everyday viewings.
