CSS13 – Great Fire of ‘49 is a powerful visual narrative capturing a pivotal moment in the history of Windsor, Ontario. In April 1849, a devastating fire ravaged half of the young village, with the steamboat Hastings believed to be the source of the blaze. Amid the chaos, Windsor’s lack of fire-fighting resources left the village vulnerable, but thanks to the quick action of Detroit’s fire chief, the situation was salvaged. From across the river, Detroit sent help in the form of two ferry boats laden with men and equipment, ultimately saving Windsor from total destruction.
This painting honors the extraordinary response and cooperation between the two cities. The imagery evokes the ferocity of the fire as it blazes out of control, juxtaposed against the desperate yet heroic measures taken to quell the flames. In recognition of Detroit’s life-saving intervention, Windsor gifted a silver bullhorn, which remains a symbol of this historic bond.
With a rich backdrop of cross-border solidarity and human spirit, CSS13 – Great Fire of ‘49 encapsulates not just a moment in history, but the enduring ties of friendship and mutual aid between Windsor and Detroit.
