CSS14 – Grandpa’s Work is a poignant, deeply personal painting from the Canadian Southland Series. This artwork depicts a moment in time as a family comes together to pick up Grandpa at the end of his workday at the historic Wagon Works, the first Ford factory in Canada. The scene captures the simplicity and warmth of family life, as the grandfather waves from the window, greeted by his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.
Interestingly, this piece was originally numbered as the 14th in the series, but it is actually the 13th. The change in numbering was made in honor of the family’s desire to avoid the “unlucky 13” for this special tribute to Grandpa Poisson.
The painting highlights the early days of the automotive industry, before Henry Ford’s revolutionary assembly line concept. The vehicles in the painting are being painstakingly constructed piece by piece, reflecting the careful craftsmanship that marked the era.
A surprising detail in the painting is the door leading to a room that would have been Grandpa Poisson’s office—an accidental yet profound connection to the artist’s own family history. CSS14 – Grandpa’s Work is a heartfelt tribute to hard work, family ties, and the legacy that shaped the community’s history.
