CSS5 – Celebrating the New City marks a proud moment in Windsor’s history, capturing the official celebration of the city’s centennial in 1992. Commissioned by the Windsor Kinsmen Club, this limited edition print commemorates the birth of Windsor, located at the southernmost tip of the Canadian peninsula along the Detroit River. The Latin motto “Per Mare Per Terra” (by land and by sea) perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the city’s origins—by both water and land, its residents made their way to settle in Windsor.
Suchiu, renowned for his historical artistry, meticulously researched and planned for over 100 hours to ensure that every detail of this momentous event was accurately depicted. The scene is set in Windsor’s iconic Dieppe Park, where, in 1892, thousands gathered to celebrate. In the background, you’ll spot the majestic ferry boats and paddle-wheel barges that transported people from all walks of life, while three regiments arrived to salute the city’s milestone.
The painting highlights a member of the Queen’s Own Essex 21st Fusiliers—today’s Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment—on horseback, a symbol of the military presence that graced the festivities.
This stunning piece, featuring Windsor’s Centennial Mayor Michael Hurst’s signature, offers a timeless way to celebrate Windsor’s rich history and its vibrant future.
