CSS6 – Makers of Baskets captures a serene and mystic moment in time, blending historical narrative with a spiritual connection to the land. The scene transports viewers to 1922 in a southwestern Lake Erie hardwood forest, where a group of nomadic indigenous people worked as woodsmen clearing land, with their women accompanying them, weaving beautiful black ash baskets to sell. Set against a misty, early morning backdrop, the painting evokes the warmth of a slow-burning fire and the calm of nature.
Inspired by a true story, the painting portrays a young farm boy fascinated by the tribe’s culture, learning about their crafts and traditions. His curiosity earned him a special gift: an arrowhead necklace, now passed down through generations in his family. The piece also honors Terry Doxtater, a prominent aboriginal leader, featured in the painting.
At the heart of the scene, the elder Katie Sickle, the last Oneida basket weaver of her time, teaches her daughter the art of this sacred craft. The young women in the background prepare the black ash strips necessary for basket weaving, passing down skills that have been practiced for generations.
This painting beautifully captures a pivotal moment in local history, one that has lasted for centuries and continues to inspire.
