“Low Level Harvards” by Ron Suchiu is a captivating painting that brings to life a thrilling piece of Canadian aviation history. Set in the early 1940s, it depicts two AT-6 Harvard Mk4 aircraft soaring dangerously low through Toronto’s Don Valley, with the daring intention of flying under the iconic Bloor Street Bridge. These planes are returning to their training base at RCAF Station Borden, where pilots honed their skills during World War II.
The inspiration for this painting comes from a story shared by Suchiu’s friend, Dave Manchester, a two-time Canadian Scale RC airplane champion and a former Spitfire pilot. Manchester recalled a particularly mischievous moment in his flying career, where he and his fellow pilot took the Harvards on a low-level stunt before returning to base. The humorous and unforgettable aftermath of the flight—where a distracted student caused significant damage to the aircraft—adds depth and charm to the story behind this painting.
The piece is part of a special set of early aviation paintings and is an homage to Suchiu’s lifelong passion for aviation and model planes.
